We are incredibly honored and excited to announce our February Caregiver of the Month, Magdala William. Magdala also known as ” Maggie” is a hospice aid for New Hope Hospice in Indianapolis. She has been with New Hope for 2 years. Maggie has an amazing story that’s sure to inspire all. After sitting down with Maggie for a few minutes, it was clear to see she is truly one of the most caring and gracious individuals.

Maggie came to the United State in 2004 with her son and her daughter. She is a native of Haiti.  Maggie lost many of her friends and family in the earthquake of 2010 including her grandmother and her own daughter. For many this tragedy might have hindered them from pursuing their dreams and goals. However, Maggie’s strong spirit has kept her going. Maggie says she is motived by the pain that she has gone through and wants to help others.

Maggie started out working in a nursing home caring for the residents when she came to the United States. Her skills of caring for others were instantly noticed. Later, she began working in hospice. She admits that it was a challenge at first but now describes it has an honor and a blessing to be a part of her patients’ lives, especially during their final moments. “Putting smiles on their faces” is the most important thing to Maggie. Coming from Haiti to the United States has made Maggie appreciate every little thing from her patients smiling faces to her co-workers she describes as friends.

” I will keep a smile on my face until my last day,” says Maggie.

Maggie has recently been diagnoses with breast cancer. She is currently undergoing treatment while still working as a hospice aid. Maggie says it is important to be strong for her patients and her family.

When asked what Maggie most enjoys about working in hospice she replied, “seeing my patients smile and hearing their stories.” There is no length Maggie won’t go to see her patients happy. She often does their hair and their nails. She has found it is the little things that make all the difference.

Maggie’s advice to other caregivers and anyone who is struggling is, “Be strong, you can’t give up. If you give up, it’s going to rain.”

Maggie credits her co-workers as her motivation. She says they are great and incredibly supportive. Below are some of the kind words Maggie’s co-workers said about her.
